January 2012 – Happy New Year

I keep telling myself I need to write post (blog) on a regular basis so here is my first of hopefully many this year.

Let me tell you about our new High Tunnel

Our big project this fall has been building our high tunnel and I can’t wait to put it to use. Actually I planted some broccoli and cabbage in the footprint of the high tunnel before we started construction. What I am really looking forward to is having vine ripe tomatoes in early to mid June.

This picture was taken just after putting on the plastic cover which is about 120 feet long by 30 feet wide. Needless to say you don’t want to try this when there is any wind or even a breeze. Once the plastic is on you need to scramble to get it secured to the frame before a breeze comes along and rearranges the cover. Normally I would have the ends closed in before attaching the plastic but the weather was so calm I could not pass up the opportunity. We finished the ends over the next weekend before we had any windy days.

This picture was taken in December after we had finished the ends. The high tunnel is ready to take on Winter weather.
